Over $65,000 was distributed to small- and medium-sized businesses in the Municipal District of Bonnyville as part of a joint regional COVID-19 relief program,

The program, which was funded by the M.D., Town of Bonnyville, and Community Futures Lakeland, distributed more than 98 per cent of the funds they had available for the program to 68 businesses.

Each recipient was given $1,000 to help with pandemic expenses, such as purchasing personal protective equipment. The money could also be used for marketing, accounting and other business services, like developing e-commerce ready websites.

Funds from the town and M.D. came from the province’s Municipal Operating Support Transfer (MOST) program.

“I’m very pleased that we’ve been able to assist local businesses in this small way during these challenging times,” said Greg Sawchuk, reeve of the M.D.

He and Bonnyville Mayor Gene Sobolewski encouraged people to shop locally.

“Small businesses are central to the economy of rural areas,” said Sobolewski.

Local businesses are encouraged to contact Community Futures Lakeland at 780-826-3858 for updates and information on grants, loans, and other programs that can help them succeed. Some programs currently running include one-on-one business counseling, research services and free webinars.
